What You Can Expect

Alsace Wine Route: Tasting Tour from Strasbourg

Drive through the pretty village of Ribeauville on your wine tasting tour

Meet your knowledgeable guide at the tourist information office in the middle of Strasbourg, where you’ll climb into a comfortable minivan to start your tour. Head out along the Alsace Wine Route (Routes des Vins d’Alsace in French), which is a 105-mile (170-km) route winding through the rolling hills at the base of the Vosges Mountains. This area is home to hundreds of famous vineyards.

The first stop on your wine tour is the wine area called Mittelbergheim, where the grands crus of Kastelberg, Zotzenberg and Wiebelsberg are located. This area is known for its excellent Riesling wines, which are typically thought of as German. At the first winery of your tour, sample Riesling along with some sylvaner and pinot blanc.

Next, head for Dambach-la-Ville. This village produces more wine than any other in Alsace, including one of the finest Alsatian wines of all — frankstein grand cru. At the second winery stop of the tour, sample wines in a classic wine cellar (caveau in French) while learning how the region’s soil and climate combine to produce exceptional Riesling and gewürztraminer wines.

Take a break at midday for lunch (own expense), followed by a visit to the Ribeauvillé-Riquewihr wine area. There are five grands cru here — Kirchberg, Osterberg, Geisberg, Schoenenbourg and Sporen. Here again you’ll find the wine production is dominated by Riesling, although other wines of note include Muscat, gewürztraminer and pinot gris.

Spend some time in the charming villages of Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, where you’ll have your last two wine tasting sessions at two of the best-loved wineries in the Alsace. Hear about how some of the chateaux making wine in the area — such as the Hugel and Trimbach families — have been making wine in the area for hundreds of years.

At the conclusion of a day-long wine tour through the Alsace, climb back into the minivan for the relaxing ride back to Strasbourg.

We had a great day visiting wineries and small towns of the Alsace Wine Route where we could not have reached on our own. The 3 wineries we went were all different in size, so it made the experience very special. Special thanks to Pauline, our wonderful guide, who was open and knowledgeable both about each location and about wine! She was also helpful in contacting the agent for sending wine overseas. The small group idea is excellent!

What a perfect way to see this part of France. Danielle, our guide, drove our small group to not only out of the way wineries but beautiful villages we would not have otherwise seen. One member of our group knew a lot about wine and said his favorite stop was a small, family operated winery where the son was in the process of taking over for his parents who lovingly watched him make the presentation. The wine was excellent. Each stop was unique and presented a different perspective. Between stops Danielle provided information about the region and listened to our interests, finding beautiful vistas for the photographers in our group. It was a terrific day!

This was great! Comfortable transport, small group 6 of us in total, great guide. Little villages, really interesting vineyards especially the organic one that really lets you explore how different soils impact the minerality of white wines.

We had such a great day wine tasting with our guide Pauline and another couple. Pauline was an absolute delight...so friendly and knowledgeable and a great driver! The wineries we visited especially the first one were charming and it was amazing to interact with the wine makers and hear their stories. It was one of our most favorite days in Alsace! My boyfriend and I ended up being the only two on the tour with Alvaro. His knowledge of the Alsace region and its wines is expansive, and he catered the experience to fit our interests and tastes. Unforgettable experience!

My wife and I had the van to ourselves and so our guide, Florence, was willing to go anywhere we wanted along the wine route. We chose to stick to her itinerary and were very pleased. We visited wineries between Strasbourg and Colmar and never felt any pressure to buy wine from the producers. However, we did end up buying because the wine was good and the owners were warm, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Florence was very engaging and knowledgeable about her subject. Her experience and warmth shown through the entire day and we were sorry to have to say au revoir. Highly recommend the tour.
