Your day trip to Sonoma and Napa from San Francisco starts with hotel pickup by biodiesel minicoach for the drive north into wine country. Cross the Golden Gate Bridge, and look out over the Pacific Ocean on one side and San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz on the other before moving into the Marin Headlands, near Mt. Tamalpais.
As you enter Sonoma County, enjoy views of vineyards and hills while your guide tells you about this renowned wine region and its different varietals. Make your first stop at Benziger Family Winery for a 45-minute tour by open-air tram. Explore the property’s biodynamic vineyards, fermentation center, and crush pad, and walk into the barrel cave. During the tour, learn about Benziger’s winemaking philosophies and practices, from the growing of organic grapes without pesticides to the aging process to the bottle.
Then head to the tasting room for a sample of wines followed by a picnic lunch on the grounds. Enjoy a deli sandwich (ham, turkey, roast beef, or vegetarian), accompanied by pasta salad, fruit, and a cookie. After lunch, return to the minicoach for the drive across the county line into Napa County, where you’ll visit a winery or tasting room in Oakville, Yountville, or the town of Napa.
Your day trip ends with the drive back to San Francisco, stopping for a photo op at a viewpoint above the Golden Gate Bridge before hotel drop-off.
