Overview

Raise your chances of seeing the Northern Lights by heading far from light pollution on this 3-5hour evening tour from Reykjavik. Settle into a comfortable coach, and venture deep into the countryside away from cities and towns, looking for clear skies and watching for the lights. Visit different viewpoints to follow sightings or scan the skies, and with luck, enjoy a memorable light display. Warming cocoa and ‘kleina’ (deep-fried pastries) included.
  • 3-5 hour Northern Lights tour by bus from Reykjavik
  • Escape light pollution and watch for the phenomenon in the dark countryside
  • Stop at viewpoints and with luck, see the spectacular lights overhead
  • Learn the science and legends behind the lights
  • Keep warm with ‘kleina’ pastries and cocoa
  • Air-conditioned transport by coach, with pickup and drop-off near your Reykjavik hotel
Dress warmly and begin your 3-5 hour tour with pickup from your Reykjavik hotel. Hop inside your comfortable coach and leave the city for Iceland’s dark countryside.

On route, listen as your guide shares background on the Northern Lights, otherwise called the Aurora Borealis. Learn how they appear when charged solar particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, and hear the legends associated with the spectacular natural phenomenon.

As you travel, your guide will watch for any sign of the lights, and for the clear skies needed for sightings. It’s also important to be away from artificial lights, so your journey will take you far from Reykjavik, and towns and villages.

Keep a lookout from your coach, and stop at viewpoints to see or look for the luminous ribbons. Step outside for the best views, and with luck, enjoy a sighting or two. Capture the lights on camera, and keep warm with delicious kleina and cocoa.

After anything from 3 to five hours — the exact tour duration depends on when and if the lights appear, and how long it takes to find clear skies — return to Reyjkjavik, where your hunt ends with a drop-off close to your hotel.

Please note: sightings of the Northern Lights are not guaranteed on this tour. If the lights are not seen, you will be given the option of joining the tour on another date, free of charge.

The tour guide was very knowledgable and explained the reasoning behind the northern lights. We were probably out on the bus for about 4 hours, making two stops. Hot chocolate was included with the tour which was a nice touch. If you do not see the lights on your tour you are allowed to come back for a second night.

I cannot recommend this tour enough. Our tour guide was amazing and made sure we saw the northern lights by traveling to multiple spots until we finally saw them. The hot chocolate was a great addition to the cold night.

Even though we did not see any activity full moon and cloudy, our guide was optimistic and never stopped trying to find a clear patch of sky. He also brought hot chocolate which was much needed on that very cold night!

amazing! no words or picture can ever do it justice. Make sure you bring a high quality camera if you want proof! word of advice: at one point, put the camera away and just enjoy the majestic beauty of the star-studded sky and beautiful lights dancing!

Easy pickup and drop off from stop 12 across from our hotel STORM Our rep on the bus was very informative. Didn't see the lights on our first night but not without trying. Very cold but the hot chocolate was really nice. We were too tired the 2nd night so plumbed for the 3rd night. Although the skies were clear and you could see the stars clearly we were told unless there is solar activity then there wouldn't be much chance. However we did spot some activity not all singing and dancing but glad after all the effort we could actually see some. Thrilled as we were giving up hope on this occasion too. I used a phone app and my husband had better settings on his camera.

Our guide was great and we lucked out and saw the Northern Lights very quickly. Also got hot chocolate at the end! I would absolutely recommend a small group tour like this.

We only saw a few greenish clouds and a few pale wisps overhead which, we were informed, had been Northern Lights burned out. Our tour operator suggested everyone call to re-schedule this trip for a future night free-of-charge but the next night the weather was too bad and they cancelled it. That was the only chance we had to take advantage of the free excursion promised. No refund was offered or given.

We weren't able to see the lights, but this wasn't due to the guides lack of trying- they were fantastic. We went twice- the second time caught the lights on time lapse camera. The hot chocloate and doughnuts were a real treat on cold nights!

Tour felt a bit rushed to be done and dusted. We stopped at the first sight of light about 15min away from Reykajvik and that was it. Unfortunately we had not much to see, no major display.
