After pickup from your Reykjavik hotel, settle inside a climate-controlled minibus with your guide. Then, gaze at Iceland’s lava plains, mountains, and pastures as you leave Reykjavik for the Golden Circle.
For starters, visit the vast Hellisheiðarvirkjun geothermal plant, a power station that harnesses Iceland’s geothermal energy to produce sustainable electricity. Take a tour of the geothermal exhibition to see how the plant turbines work and learn about green energy via the multimedia presentations.
Stop to see the volcanic crater lake at Kerið, and then continue to the Faxi waterfall, a beautiful cascade complete with a man-made fish ladder. With luck, watch salmon jumping up through the ladder, and then tour the best-known Golden Circle sights, with a break for lunch (own expense) on route.
See the hot pools of the steaming Geysir geothermal field, and watch its Strokkur geyser erupt up to 65.6 feet (20 meters) in the air. Then, admire the Gullfoss waterfall before driving into UNESCO-listed Thingvellir Park. Check out the site of Iceland’s 10th-century parliaments, and stop at the tectonic rift, where the tectonic plates of America and Eurasia face each other.
Your tour then finishes with a drop-off near your Reykjavik hotel.
