What You Can Expect

New Orleans Cocktail History Walking Tour in the French Quarter

Cocktail History Walking Tour

Your night of cultured imbibing begins as evening arrives in the French Quarter. Head to Evangeline’s to meet your lively guide and start your 3‐hour tour with a cocktail in the restaurant’s intimate courtyard. Sip on a southern classic, such as a French 75 or a Mint Julep, as you get an intriguing introduction to New Orleans drinking culture. Pace yourself, as your tour includes four cocktails at four different venues – and more at your own expense.

Your second visit will be to SoBou, a local favorite that’s part of the acclaimed Commander’s Palace family. There, try one of two versions of the classic Sazerac, a recipe attributed to a Creole apothecary in the 19th Century – when cocktails constituted as medicine! Then head to Bourbon ‘O’ Bar to sample a local craft beer or the obscure yet beloved Roffignac cocktail, a nod to the city’s last French‐born mayor.

Your final stop is at Tujague’s, the oldest authentic Creole restaurant in New Orleans, serving loyal locals since 1856. Sample a sweet, minty Grasshopper – invented here! – or a whiskey‐ and brandy‐based Vieux Carré cocktail. If you’re in need of some tasty nibbles, stay on at Tujague’s (where you tour ends) or head to the hip Faubourg‐Marigny quarter nearby.

Along the way, learn fascinating histories including the controversy around absinthe, and the cocktail‐related tales of (unexpected) venues such as the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum and Napoleon House.

Please note: Some bars have a dress code. Men are discouraged from wearing tank tops.

This tour was amazing. Lindsey our tour guide was great. Not only did we receive history on cocktails, but also on New Orleans and the establishments we visited. The cocktails were delicious. We would highly recommend this tour, if you would like to take a break from Bourbon Street for a few hours.

Well worth it, and we will do this again . . . especially with friends, next trip. Dr. Gumbo aka The Reverend Most Doctorly in Drink Benjamin Wisdom is a talented impresario. He weaves showmanship, comedy and serious history, local and world-wide, all the way back to 12,000 B.C. to tell the story of hard liquor through the Ages. If you have a companion, you experience six drinks in all two of which are shared, so you each enjoy four full-sized boozey beverages. The brandy crusta was a bit too sour, but the sazerac, my tai, and a number named after a NOLA mayor from past glory days were fantastic. An excellent three-hour walking tour. Excellent value. Great entertainment!
