The UNESCO World Heritage site of Teotihuacan, known as the City of the Gods, is believed to have been established around 100 BC. Take full advantage of this private tour with your own archeologist guide to learn all there is know about this ancient site. After hotel pickup in Mexico City by air-conditioned minivan, travel with your guide about an hour northeast of the city to Teotihuacan.

Inside the archeological zone, explore the palaces, plazas and pyramids, while learning fascinating history about the architecture and its cultural foundations from your guide. Visit the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, as well as the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl. See the complex’s less-visited monuments, including elaborate murals and other architectural nuances. Hear about the most recent archeological findings, the lifestyles of the residents of this once-thriving city and theories behind the city’s decline.

Stroll along the Avenue of the Dead (Calle de los Muertos), a 1.5-mile (2.4-km) road that connects the main structures, including the Pyramid of the Moon and Pyramid of the Sun. You’ll have the chance to climb these magnificent edifices for stunning bird’s-eye views of Teotihuacan.

After touring the archeological site, board your minivan and en route back to Mexico City, stop by an obsidian workshop. Meet a local family and sample tequila, mescal and liqueurs made from native cactus plants. Purchase lunch here, if you like, before your day trip ends with drop-off at your Mexico City hotel.

I had a blast here. It was a perfect day with the perfect guide (Lulu). The history. The architecture. The ability to step back in time and just imagine the Teotihuacan way of life. It was all outstanding.

I did my trip with Amigo Tours. The site was great, but having a good guide really makes the difference. Also, make sure you're physically able to manage the trip. LOTS of stairs (but you don't have to climb the whole thing if you don't want to).

Literally the best tour I have ever taken! Our tour guide was Roberto. He met us a few minutes early at our hotel and he was the best. He told us about himself and asked about me and where I came from. He is very knowledgeable and personable. The journey from our hotel to Teotihuacan was a bit of a distance, but Roberto told us about the neighborhoods we were passing nearby, so the trip was quite enjoyable. He answered every question we had. Once we made it to Teotihuacan, we were able to take in the site and all of its beauty because the crowds had not yet arrived. Roberto told of the history of the entire area, the people, the language and the Spanish conquest. We climbed both pyramids and learned more. I would not have made it to the top without Roberto's encouragement. He also doubles as a pretty good photographer! If you are looking for a day tour to the pyramids, this is definitely the one to take! Ask for Roberto!

Lourdes and Sigmundo were very amiable hosts. The site was empty and quiet except for birdsong and morning sweeping. By noon we were on top of the temple of the moon watching schoolchildren with jaguar whistles streaming along the avenue of the dead. Many questions and many souvenirs. Gracias!

Prompt pick up and care for my disabled husband, whose rollator had to be accomodated. Leonardo Mora is a fine guide, and helped us understand the significance of this beautiful, mysterious site at Teotehuacan.
