Depart from the centrally located Chur railway station, and climb into the mountains on the Alps’ highest transalpine railway. Listen to live commentary as you cross 196 bridges and viaducts, then disappear into 55 tunnels blasted into the rock, learning about the engineering achievements and construction work that went into completing a line through the rugged terrain.
Snap photos through the Bernina Express’ panoramic windows while ascending the Bernina Pass, then spot the Ospizio Bernina at 7,391 feet (2,253 mt.), the highest point along the route. The train pauses for 1.5 or 2 hours in Tirano (schedule varies with season), giving you time to explore the small, Italian town’s piazza, catholic church, and winding river, all with the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Board the Bernina Express to make the return trip to Chur, arriving at 6:20pm in summer, and 7pm in winter.
All of the cars have panoramic windows to let in towering views; 1st class cars are more spacious, with three seats across the width of the train, while 2nd class cars have four seats across.
