What You Can Expect

Lava Expedition From Hilo

Lava Field

Receive an afternoon pickup from your Hilo hotel, transferring to a private location in the island’s Puna District where your volcano hunting begins.

Drive as close as possible to Kilauea’s most recent active eruptions, stopping to continue on foot for a closer look. The sun will soon set behind the horizon, transforming the landscape with an eerie glow in the gathering darkness. You’ll also hear the sound of the eruption in progress, listening for the hiss and crackle of this liquid rock as it oozes toward the ocean. As you walk, your guide will help explain the volcanic process that created the Hawaiian Islands, adding a new layer of insight to your adventure. At the end of your nocturnal lava adventure, return back to the car for a transfer back to your hotel.

Please note: Guests should wear sturdy closed toe shoes. Slippers, sandals and flip-flops will not be accepted. A light jacket, hat, long pants, and sunglasses are all highly recommended. Though we do our best to find molten lava on every outing, the constantly changing nature of volcanic eruptions means there is no guarantee of a sighting.

It was an amazing tour! We saw lava from less than two meter distance. And the tour guide Henry was very knowledgeable, knows so much about the area, the history, the geology, and he is passionate about his work! At the volcano park, Henry also bought us a telescope so that we can see the volcano eruption as well video tape it. All in all i really enjoyed this tour.

Great expedition. We didn't see lava on top of the volcano but we did see some going into the ocean. Campbell was a great guide, very knowledgeable. The bbq at the winery was amazing. Id suggest bringing hot clothes for when the sun drops because it gets super cold.

Our guide, Ashley, was positively amazing! In addition to being extremely knowledgeable about the tour, she was able to take our group to areas not routinely visited on these type adventures. This trip was an amazing deal and a must-do for anyone looking for a real volcano adventure.
