What You Can Expect

Lava Expedition From Kona

Lava Ocean

Receive a mid-day pickup from your hotel, transferring to a private location in the island’s Puna District. Start your lava adventure by tucking into an included picnic-style deli meal accompanied by your choice of beverage. Once you’re done with the meal, your volcano hunting begins.

Drive as close as possible to Kilauea’s most recent active eruptions, stopping to continue on foot for a closer look. The sun will soon set behind the horizon, transforming the landscape with an eerie glow in the gathering darkness. You’ll also hear the sound of the eruption in progress, listening for the hiss and crackle of this liquid rock as it oozes toward the ocean. As you walk, your guide will help explain the volcanic process that created the Hawaiian Islands, adding a new layer of insight to your adventure. At the end of your nocturnal lava adventure, return back to the car for a transfer back to your hotel.

Please note: Guests should wear sturdy closed toe shoes. Slippers, sandals and flip-flops will not be accepted. A light jacket, hat, long pants, and sunglasses are all highly recommended. Though we do our best to find molten lava on every outing, the constantly changing nature of volcanic eruptions means there is no guarantee of a sighting.

JohnO was a GREAT guide. He answered any and every question. Definitely knows The Big Island's customs, history, local spots... basically everything! Super friendly. Very funny. Instantly turned a van of strangers into a tight group.

Had a great time on this tour. Our driver/guide Mike was awesome. While driving he did a great job telling us all interesting facts about Hawaii and his passion for the islands was apparent. While on the long hikes to and from the lava viewing area he was always making sure everybody was doing okay and pointing out interesting things along the way. A

Our guide Jon, was very knowledgeable and very accurate in picking the right place for the break out flow to happen. We are older so the 9 mile hike over the rough terrain of the volcano was a little hard, but well worth it. The wine tasting and dinner were OK and the visit to the museum and crater rim was awesome although it rained the entire time. As a side he took us to the lava tube. Long day but well worth it!

Good tour and informative, a bit on the pricey side given that the walk was mostly self-guided in the park
