Kumasi Cultural Heritage

Kumasi is considered the cultural hub of Ghana, so if you’ve come to learn more about the rich culture of the Asante Kingdom—both past and present—you've come to the right place.

To understand the modern culture of Kumasi, you must first understand its past. You’ll find vestiges of Asante heritage throughout the city, starting with the former palace of the Asante king at the Manhyia Palace Museum. After whetting your cultural appetite, you’ll find a cultural feast at the National Cultural Centre, a complex that includes a museum on Asante history, traditional crafts demonstrations and an excellent craft market for picking up souvenirs.

Located in the heart of bustling Kumasi, the Kejetia Market is the largest open-air market in West Africa and a perfect place to plunge headfirst into Kumasi’s modern cultural scene. The 30-acre (12-hectare) market houses some 10,000 vendors selling everything you could imagine, and while you can easily visit on your own, it’s much more enriching to go with a guide who can explain what you’re seeing and help pick out the best bargains.

If seeing all that fresh produce leaves you feeling hungry, consider joining a Kumasi food tour, complete with a market visit, where you’ll learn how to barter for the best ingredients, and a cooking class to learn how to prepare a traditional Ghanaian meal.

If there’s one element of West African culture that’s most misunderstood, it’s voodoo, and here you can explore the mysterious, ancient rituals of the religion with the help of a guide and a local voodoo priest. If you desire, the priest will give you a personal consultation, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
