Tomioka Silk Mill Tours

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, the Tomioka Silk Mill was once among the largest silk producers on the planet and remains one of the best-preserved Meiji-era government factories in Japan.

Built during the late nineteenth century, the mill comprises four sites, each with a different role in the silk manufacturing process: a silk reeling plant, experimental farm for producing cocoons, a cold storage facility for the silkworm eggs and a school, where the science of sericulture was taught. These facilities and the machinery within remain in excellent condition.
