One of Germany’s nightlife capitals and ideally located for cruising the Rhine River, Dusseldorf makes a great choice for a city break, and a three-day trip offers ample time to enjoy the highlights.
Day 1: Explore the Old Town
Take in the sights on a walking tour of Dusseldorf’s historic Old Town, starting at the Burgplatz castle tower, then following the Rheinuferpromenade along the Rhine waterfront. Pay a visit to landmarks like the Rathaus (City Hall), St. Lambertus Basilica, Neander Church and the Rheinpark, then hit the shops along the famous Konigsallee (King's Alley). Spend the evening bar-hopping in the Old Town, nicknamed ‘the longest bar in the world’ for it’s nearly 300 bars, pubs and clubs, where you can order a glass of local brew, Altbier.
Day 2: Take in the sights along the Rhine
Start with a late breakfast at a waterfront restaurant in the Media Harbor, after which you can stroll around the modern marina, admiring the unique Gehry buildings and taking in the views from the Rheinturm TV Tower. Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing cruise along the Rhine River, before heading back to the Media Harbor to check out some of the city’s most glamorous cocktail bars and hottest nightclubs.
Day 3: Get out of the city
Use your final day to take in some of the nearby sights like Schloss Benrath (Benrath Castle) or take a day tour of Cologne, where you can view the UNESCO-listed Cologne Cathedral, explore the picturesque Old Town and visit the acclaimed Museum Ludwig. Other popular choices include Bonn, the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven, and the UNESCO-listed Rhine Valley, which can be discovered on a cruise from Cologne.
