Muay Thai Boxing Experiences in Chiang Mai
By Viator, August 2018
Thailand's national sport, Muay Thai takes place in a boxing ring between two combatants. It is a full-contact martial art where opponents battle using their fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet. Before fighting, the boxers perform a ritual called the wai kru ram muay to show respect and ask for protection. It's a fascinating and sometimes brutal sport, demanding utmost fitness and strength among participants.
Muay Thai events take place in various venues around both Phuket and Chiang Mai. In Phuket, Patong Boxing Stadium plays host to the most popular events, complete with wild Thai music called sarama (following the action and rhythm of the fights) and passionate supporters placing bets on competitors. Chiang Mai is home to two boxing stadiums with multiple events per week. Each event typically consists of eight fights, and the boxers may be Thai or foreigners from a local muay Thai training camp.
