Bangkok Chinatown (Yaowarat) Tours

Offering a heady mix of food, shopping and ancient temples, there’s never a dull moment in Bangkok’s Chinatown, also known as Yaowarat. Exploring the bustling sois (side-streets) branching off from the main thoroughfare of Yaowarat Road, the oldest district in the city, is a must-do on any trip to the Thai capital.

Travelers can head to the parallel Yaowarat Road and Sampeng Lane for shopping, as there are plenty of deals to be had if you’re willing to engage in some friendly haggling. Chinatown also has more gold shops per square miles than anywhere else in the capital, and Wat Traimit, situated near Hua Lampong Station, attracts visitors as the home of the world’s largest solid-gold seated Buddha, which weighs more than five tons. Elsewhere, a colorful flower market sits on the district’s northern fringes and Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, set along a small passageway leading off Charoen Krung Road, is Bangkok’s most important Chinese-Buddhist temple.

When the sun goes down, Chinatown is filled with locals and travelers in search of their favorite dim sum, noodle and seafood dishes, with plenty of restaurants and street stalls to choose from. Due to the sheer number of options, foodies often opt to visit as part of a food tour in order to reap the rewards of traveling with a local guide. Biking and walking tours are other popular ways to explore Bangkok’s Chinatown, as mos options include shopping, eating and visits to the area’s most important temples.

Insider's Tip: Chinatown is at its most vibrant during major festivals such as Chinese New Year.

Practical Info

The easiest way to reach Chinatown is by boat; alight at Ratchawong Pier and walk up Ratchawong Road until you get to Sampeng Lane or Yaowarat Road. You can also disembark at Harbor Department Pier or Memorial Bridge Pier. Alternatively, take the subway to Hua Lampong Station on the eastern bank of the Phadung Krung Kasem Canal.
